Scientists have done enough with the big boys’ things, now they are going down to child’s play. But their child’s play is still trickier than big boys’ fun, and that’s evident with this smallest snowman that engineers at the National Physical Laboratory have developed. David Cox has built this snowman (not out of rolling balls of snow) but out of two tiny beads, usually used by physicists to calibrate electron microscope lenses, welded together with platinum. Measuring as thin as 0.01mm (1/5 the width of human hair), the snowman a result of manipulation with particles of nanotech has eyes and smile carved from a focused ion beam while a tiny platinum accumulation is used for its nose.


A cute little masterpiece indeed.
