Tilera's 100-core processor leaves Intel in a thinking cap

Thought Intel was on the pinnacle of this processor war, damn you, there’s a competitor here, quite impressive one on that. Tilera as the manufacturer is known, has unveiled a 100 cores processor now, that’s something. I don’t need computing with that processing power, do you? Oh yeah, there is a world beyond us. The difference here in this impressive processor is that instead of the data bus, the grid here uses a mesh network with switches provided on each core to route the data more smoothly.

This unconventional processor, fabricated using 40-nanometer technology is said to be ten times more power-efficient than Intel’s 32 nanometer design, and about four times faster as compared to eight-core Intel’s expected to be working on. Intel in the same league has shown prototypes of an 80-core research design but that isn’t expected before five year’s whereas the Tilera’s 100 cores processor is expected to be available early next year.
