The Plasma Blowtorch chars the plaque, not your teeth
Atul | Jun 12 2009

The evolving developments of technology don’t even spare the teeth, but cheerfully, it is for the good of mankind. Researchers from the University of Southern California have succeeded in developing a blowtorch that “blows” plasma to get rid of the plaque on the teeth. Scared that a blowtorch emitting plaque could actually char your teeth? This plaque is just as hot as your room is, thanks to the minuscule level of electricity it requires to ionize the gas in the flame.

Even 10 minutes of exposure to the flame raises the temperature of your tooth by a mere five degrees. The plasma flame is effective in getting rid of the bonded plaque by creating free radical oxygen that even gets cleared by the bacteria. Apparently used as a sterilization device for root canals, it predictably has a lot of other uses in the future.
