Found aboard the USS Salem (CA 139), this steampunky-looking command phone certainly reminds one so fondly of the days gone by. The warship never served in the World War II, but had a distinguished 10 year-long carrer as a flagship of the US Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean and the Second Fleet in the Atlantic and holds the distinction of being the world’s only preserved Heavy Cruiser. The command phone too was preserved in its original state aboard the ship with its candid anchor and rope motif in the brass escutcheon preserved to perfection. I doubt if the makers of the phone intended it to look like a Steampunk creation, but to people of our generation who are witnessing the splendor of the naval classic nearly half a century after it was first made, I dare say it still inspires a lot of awe and wonder.
