Solar Sailor: Green ships conquering the vast blue ocean
Vikas Shekhawat | May 15 2006

Solar Sailor, creating ‘green ferries for blue highways’, is ready to make your trip from San Francisco to Alcatraz a special one with its latest two 600 passenger hybrid-electric ferries powered by gigantic solar wings. The zero emission hybrid-electric ferries are unique vessels that run on low-sulfur diesel generators and hence reduce fuel costs by up to 60%. The hybrid ferries with capacity of holding 600 passengers and cruising at 12 to 15 knots are also designed to trap wind energy to further supply uninterrupted power.

Solar Sailor is also planning to extend its environment friendly program to create huge ‘aquatankers’ to ship water from the monsoonal Kimberley region of Western Australia to the water-deficient Perth.
