Single wheel robotic skates could be the next way to commute

I am still to decide how I would rank these new skates over the age old roller skates we’ve used all these years. But if the makers believe that their skates will be the new form of mobility, then we’ll readily take it, but after seeing what’s actually different here. Developed by Toshinobu Takei from National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology Japan, the “Unit-type Micro-Mobility” device, this is based on takeuma - bamboo stilts, which are mechanically engineered to control the aluminum skates they are attached to. Displayed at the International Robot Exhibition the 11lbs single wheel skates have three accelerometers, and gyroscopes that can be rolled and be used step forward with. Rolling at 2.5 mph is still fine, but why would someone want to wear all this and then walk? Video after the jump.
