Blue-Laser Diodes are the main component of Blu-Ray players and HD DVD players that account for the high prices of the players.
This high price is not mainly due to the high cost of the diodes but because there are not many manufacturing the product.
Currently only Sony and Nichia were producing these diodes. Sony was mainly using them in their gaming console the PlayStation 3. That made Nichia the only supplier of the diodes.
But now the prices of these high-end players is expected to fall as Sharp has started mass-production of these diodes last month and have already shipped 150,000 diodes. This will surely give the markets some rest as now some Blu-Ray and HD DVD players will now integrate the diodes made by Sharp. If you are still deciding to buy one of these players to complete your living room then it will be better to wait for a while.
