Microsoft piracy crackdown: Will cripple PC's using pirated Vista versions
Ashutosh | Oct 5 2006

When Microsoft announced that it’s Windows Vista on a single DVD everyone thought that hackers will have a party time but Microsoft has announced that it will crack down on the pirated versions of Vista. The company plans to take harsher steps to control piracy.

The Vista will include ‘reduced functionality mode” that will severely curtail the functioning of the Vista in the pirated versions. For example a message “Access your computer with reduced functionality” the default Web browser will be started and the user will be presented with an option to purchase a new product key.

In other words, the technology doesn’t turn the computer off but will make it a miserable experience. The system will automatically log off the user while accessing net. Thus, for most practical purposes, it will renders much of the operating system useless.

It will be interesting to see what happens next and how this war on piracy goes.
