Lie detectors and other such devices that determine the “intent” of people have always been subject to a lot of flak. The argument against trusting them entirely has been on the grounds of uncertainty arising from two extreme situations – one, where the person is calm and composed despite being guilty and two, when the subject is nervous or has a faster heart rate for some unknown reason. However, the US Home Security Department claims to have the perfect answer to this scenario. Apparently, they are developing a system called MALINTENT (Malicious Intent?) that can accurately determine if the person being scanned has criminal intentions or is qualified “suspicious>”
What’s Innovative: If we have to go by the department’s claims, the system will plug the leaks currently existing in intent-determining systems. Surprisingly though, MALINTENT uses similar parameters/non-verbal cues like body temperature, heart rate and respiration to identify potential criminals. Additionally, it can actually determine if a person’s physiological response is natural or guilt-induced. However, we gather that the machine only makes an assessment and stays away from pronouncing anybody guilty.
Watch This: MALINTENT is quite cool for the fact that it can outsmart a cool, composed criminal who would otherwise be a handful for benchmarked scanning systems. However, actual field results are required for us to be really sure that a hyper-active but harmless bloke doesn’t fall prey to non-intelligent, mechanical systems.
