Leica’s recently launched S2 medium-format camera has created quite a buzz among photography circles. The reason – it packs in a mega punch with a 37.5MP CCD sensor that is 56% bigger than that of a full frame SLR camera. Despite this, the camera, in terms of physical size, would comfortably fit into an average hand. Additional features include a dual shutter system, in-lens leaf shutters, a Maestro image processing system, JPEG capability, high-precision autofocus and a whole bunch of high-end additions for the insatiable professional photographer. Leica is also launching a series of macro, extreme wide angle and tilt-shift lenses to go with this camera. The human field of vision will finally see an able match.
Pricing and Availability: Leica is holding the pricing cards of the S2 quite close to its chest. However, if we were to go by Leica’s past, be prepared to shell out a gut-wrenching 40,000-plus euros for this camera.
Watch This: As a medium-format camera, you would naturally expect the S2 to be ungainly and not the most comfortable to handle. However, the design of the camera comes as a delectable surprise to most of us, who might be deceived into believing that it is an ergonomic 35-mm camera. If we had to go by features, less said the better, “coz the S2 is a powerhouse.”
Word around the Web:
Eric from Photographybay says:
Leica has dropped quite the shocker on everyone with their new Leica S2.
Mark Harris from Techradar says:
No word on price yet, but if you haven’t got a studio in Shoreditch with an assistant named Gustav, you probably can’t afford it.
