Here is yet another DIY device called “smart charger” from two young Kenyan students for those residing in the rural areas without electricity. Jeremiah Murimi, 24, and Pascal Katana, 22, utilize a dynamo attached to the bicycle to charge cellphone batteries with practically no cost involved. Using bits from discarded radio and television sets, the duo assembled a small charger into which the user could plug the dynamo lead.
An hour of pedaling could fully recharge the battery in just about the same time if it was plugged into an electrical socket. The user avoids paying $2 a time for battery recharge by making a one-time smart charger purchase worth 350 shillings, or $4.50. With the Kenyan National Council for Science and Technology backing the project, the students seem to beon the verge of seeing their invention mass produced.
