Hewlett-Packard cooling computers with tiny jet engines
Vikas Shekhawat | Jun 16 2006

We are proud of our achievements in the field of computer technology but still we are not able to reap the incalculable capacity of these impeccable machines to the full, owing to the nagging heat problems. The more advanced the technology is, the more is the heat produced by the machine and the less is the performance.

Hewlett-Packard wants to tame the bull by the horn. The company is arming its massive computers with fans from radio-controlled jets to maintain their much needed cool.

The computer servers, with advanced heat generating processors, now equip electric-ducted fans (EDFs), often used to power radio-controlled jets. The jet fans run fast enough to cool a number of servers by creating loads of air pressure and carrying away all the heat. The fans are embedded inside a tube to maintain silence. The so-called HP’s Active Cool Fan will debut in its next generation of BladeSystem servers. I know, what you all are thinking; I too want one right now.
