Healthcare robotic fraternity will keep expanding. New and improved robots will keep making their presence felt and we’ll have ample of them to choose from. Latest such robot makes debut in New Zealand. Dubbed Charlie, the 3.6-foot, 99-pound robot is introduced to a retirement village in the country where it will record residents’ vital signs, deliver their medication reminders, and/or call for assistance if they fall.
From South Korea’s Yujin Robot, Charlie has a 10.4-inch touchscreen fitted in place of the head, and supports Wi-Fi for connectivity. Featuring special sensors to recognize speech and obstacles, the bot along with a built-in camera also stuffs in two PCs onboard - ‘one running Linux for low-level hardware control and one running Windows for user interface control.’ Accompanied by a remote control and a self-dock for charging, Charlie can run on for three hours on a single charge.
