Google to digitalize old newspapers and put them online
Ruchi Agarwal | Sep 9 2008

Newspapers are like your morning cup of tea. What the newspaper boy drops at our doorstep is just not a bundle of paper but a retrospective snapshot of the day that has passed, and thereby makes the date an indelible part of history. Google was probably stargazing back to the time when information of digital-age milestones was spilled by newspapers. It is going to digitize about 100 newspapers and unleash scanned copies on the online platform. Google’s vice president of Search products, Marissa Mayer, also admitted that this venture is huge and different from their main stream of activities. The concept was demonstrated at the TechCrunch50 conference in San Francisco, where Ms. Mayer illustrated a digital version of the Rome News Tribune highlighting the news of the American moonwalk. Corresponding news and promotions that lie beside the story will make the reader reminiscent of that time. This scanning of archives will employ the same technology as used for Google Books. Many newspaper publishers will partner with Google for this initiative.

So after net searching, Google is now busy scanning papers and books :)
I believe scanned newspapers are available in some libraries but Google will be doing it at a much larger scale. Good for info diggers.

Google is like our one-stop solution for everything.. and with such an addition, google is onli adding the number of patrons for it..

Can’t deny that. You can ”Google” almost anything. Even their Google Earth is awesome... But I feel scanned newspapers has kind of niche audience.. not sure if it will have mass appeal.

Yes Manish.. probably because of the light that our screens emit.. its becoming little tiring to read stuff online..
its the same way we prefer actual books in our hand rather ebooks..
