Giants come together for a wireless power standard
Harshpaul | Dec 22 2008

A consortium backed by electronic giants including Logitech, Philips, Sanyo, National Semiconductor and Texas Instruments is aiming at a universal standard for powering portable devices by magnetic induction. The idea is simple, to allow the charging of devices by placing them on a surface. This would eliminate the risk of over- or undercharging of a device due to hardware conflicts.

In its initial form, the standard will apply only to devices with power requirements less than 5W, like cellphones or portable media players. As the standard grows, it will expand to include more powerful devices like notebooks and other small appliances. Definitely useful, and a simple way to go.
