FDA approves eye-implantable miniature telescope
Bharat | Apr 2 2009

An advanced prosthesis developed by VisionCare Ophthalmic Technologies, for patients surfing with severe macular degeneration, has received a confirmatory approval from the FDA. This implantable telescope could be a new hope in vision restoration of patients on the receiving end from end-stage macular degeneration.

Highly commendable achievement

There isn’t a surgical or medical treatment option available for the cure of end-stage age-related macular degeneration, therefore this optical prosthetics – small enough to be balanced on a fingertip, could perhaps be a dramatic and only real way for improved vision in such patients. For the functioning, the device enlarges the images of what the wearer is looking at over the retina enhancing the central vision (affected area by the disease), while the magnified images in the eye generate better vision for both the eye and the brain to interpret.
