Epson Premiere Ensemble - the DIY home theater

What would you give for a home-theater system with a high-def projector? Well, if you were rolling in greenbacks like I am, you wouldn’t mind shelling out so long as the installation didn’t require some weirdo from the company invading your home. Not only would it cost you some serious dosh, it would hurt your machismo too.

Epson realizes this and so has come up with its Premiere Ensemble home cinema. This one is touted as a do it yourself kit that will set you up with a movie experience in hours. It ain’t cheap though. A kit with 1080p projector will cost you about $7000 and one with a 720p projector $5000. Some screws and a weekend at home is all that’ll take for you to watch some real movies.

Components

The one thing that a good home theater system must have is a surround sound that can up a notch when need be. The Premiere Ensemble promises to deliver a good (not great) sound system. The front speakers are in the screen while the rear sounds from the projector itself.

Since the sound system is designed by Atlantic Technology, it is affordable, keeping the overall cost of the kit low. But with only 35-watt for the four channels and 60-watt center channel, don’t bet on it getting too loud.

The kit, besides offering a choice among the already mentioned pixel options, gives an optional subwoofer too. Command center has an integrated HDMI A/V controller with integrated DVD player. All the mounting brackets and wiring are included. So beware of any salesman trying to get you to buy any extra baggage. And don’t worry about the wiring that’ll connect the projector and the screen. Those hide pretty well inside a neat little duct.

So do I recommend it? Yes and no. Yes because it is value for money and no because going for a personal installation, you might still screw this up (figuratively speaking.) Don’t blame me then.
