DIY helicopters were something that shocked everyone, a couple of weeks ago when they were introduced by an entrepreneur in China. However, the scientists at The University of Surrey have another DIY in making: satellites. Strange as it may sound, these satellites were built in the University and are of the size of a refrigerator. An ex-soviet rocket would propel them into outer space where they would form a constellation and beam back pictures of the Earth which might help in collecting evidence of agricultural fraud, illegal oil dumping, natural disasters and a host of other things. These DIY satellites are growing increasingly sophisticated and small. The researchers have also reduced the cost of the satellites astonishingly. A large satellite might weigh 1000 Kg and cost $500 millions, where as these satellites cost about $10 millions and weigh only 100 Kg, along with a significantly less development time.
