Dell testing portable music player, launch due by September
Nishant | Jul 31 2008

According to Wall Street Journal, Dell has been testing a portable media player since few months now and if everything goes according to plan then we’ll see one from computer giant by this September. Dell can be named against other giants like Sony and Microsoft who’ve tried their hands on portable media player market but haven’t succedded in making an impact. Heck! I bet that half of you don’t even know if there ever was a MP3 player by Dell. It seems like Dell’s first launch will be targeted at an entry-segment. But reports say that it’ll come with a navigation screen thus it’ll be supposedly placed between iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano (avoiding competition?). Dell will price it below $100 mark hence expect it to be a basic player with monochrome screen, 1-2GB of memory and a Wi-Fi! What? Well, they’ll also be launching a iTunes store like service that’ll allow users to download and manage content from internet from different sources.

Great news. Dell is likely to produce something that’s cheaper than others. And I’d say steer clear from Apple’s niches and there might be hope. Else suffer the fate of other bigwigs.
