Microchips in a pill are being developed which would allow doctors to monitor a patient whether he has taken a pill, on a mobile phone or through a wireless internet connection. Anyone put on a lifelong medicine regime, knows well the repercussions of skipping a dose. Forgetting to take a dose on time, could backfire repulsively. Now though, we have a shimmer of light shown by scientist from Proteus Biomedical, which could end worries of forgetting a dose.
How it works
The digestible sensors (silicon microchips) measure only 1mm wide can be added to any standard drug, and assist the medicine to activate an electric charge when it is digested, the charge is then grabbed by a sensing patch which is placed either on the patient’s stomach or the back. The time of the pill digestion is recorded (along with the heart rate and breathing pattern) and the information (regarding the functioning of the pill) is then transmitted to a mobile phone or an internet wirelessly. This would help doctors keep track of their patient’s medicinal activity, and see them gain health.
