CES 2008: Sony takes to higher technologies with TransferJet
Vinod | Jan 7 2008

Sony has introduced TransferJet, a new Close Proximity Wireless Transfer Technology which allows you to transfer large data files at very high speeds. These data files include your much-loved photos, HD images, etc. The transfer will happen between electronic devices such as your mobile phones, digital cameras, digital video cameras, computers and TVs. Using TransferJet, you can transfer any file at phenomenal speeds. Well, if you have always looked for simple ways for huge data transfer, this is your solution.

Apparently, the device did not seem to work too smoothly at Sony’s press conference when vice president of marketing at Sony electronics tried to demonstrate it during the press conference. As with any newbie technology, lets hope that the kinks are sorted out. Sony showed a TransferJet-enabled video camera sending video to a PC and a camera sending photos to a PC. It was the coolest new thing in the Sony booth, and that’s evident from the video after the jump.

The technology used in TransferJet, is somewhat insulated from privacy concerns because the two devices can only be 1.75 inches away from each other for the connection to work. For privacy theft to happen, someone would have to snuggle up really close to extract the contact list from your phone.

Now, what else is good about Sony’s TransferJet? This could also be embedded into kiosks so shoppers could download songs at a record store. All of these take place wirelessly. The TransferJet stations at the Sony booth, however, worked fine.

Ultimately, Sony hopes to embed TransferJet into products. The company has not announced a schedule to put it into products yet.
