Can a robot substitute your receptionist?

Next time when enter some Japanese corporate office don’t get surprised in case a robot receptionist greets you. Front desks will soon be occupied by robots modeled after characters like Hello Kitty in Japan. Apparently, there’s no reason to be skeptical of this in a world where computers have already displaced telephones operators and assembly-line workers.

Robot Dispatch, a service launched by People Staff offer electronic receptionist shaped like Hello Kitty, designed and manufactured by Business Design Laboratory, for $424 a month on rent. Now that costs around one-sixth of any firms’ fill-ins.

The 20-inch-tall Hello Kitty Robo undoubtedly more cost effective and of course entertaining than a human attendant loaded with 20,000 stored conversation patterns, songs, and riddles, ability to recognize as many as 10 faces and interrogate with the visitors.

The concept sounds feasible in Japan with a record low birthrate but may prove tricky for the west. Also, it depends on the role a firm wants it’s receptionists to play.
