Brother Industries’ wearable Retinal Imaging Display may be real

Numerous imaging techniques are underway in different labs and production houses, but how many of them will actually see the light of day, before showing way to the others or revolutionizing something? Still, there’s the Brother Industries and we could actually bet our money on these guys. They have been working on a Retinal Imaging Display (RID) and in the latest breakthrough they reveal of having downsized the power source box of their RID thus managing a prototype for a mobile RID, to be commercialized in fiscal year 2010.

RID is actually an image projection technique wherein light is focused on the retina and then moved at such a pace that it creates afterimages – these images on the retina appear as if they existed in front of the user. Enhancing on this Brother Industry has devised an eyeglass-shaped wearable RID to be small and lightweight, courtesy optical system technologies based on the company’s laser printing technology, and piezoelectric technologies relying further on inkjet printing technology. This allows users to view images on a virtual large screen anytime, anywhere. The RID can be used manually and also offers hands-free facility in case you wanted the hands ready for other stuff.
