Developmental disorders like autism and dyslexia originate in the brain at a very early age. One in every six children globally and about 74 million children in India alone suffer from such brain disorders. While the nations better-off have been using advanced technologies to detect, India hasn’t gone beyond the neuropsychological tests. That may be in for a change with a cap-like EEG device making way into the country’s medical system.
The EEG cap has 32 channel sensors, when it is placed on the child’s scalp it begins measuring the brain’s electrical activity in real-time, allowing the doctors to watch even the slightest of abnormality relating to vision, hearing, attention and/or language processing. Dr Aditi Shankardass, head of Harvard affiliated Bright Minds Institute’s neurophysiology department, is in India working out ways with Indian doctors to imbibe this technology in hospitals across the country.
