After months of delays and rumors there is an official confirmation from Apple Inc. that the company has started shipping Apple TV.
Apple TV is a set-top box that can wirelessly stream and download iTunes videos, podcasts and music from a computer to a television.
Apple had earlier stated that the company will release the device by the end of February. Apple did not explain the cause of the delay but has stated that the launch took a few weeks more to launch.
Apple is very confident with the product and has also stated that the device is a ‘DVD Player for the internet age’.
Still the main question in the minds of customers will be that was the TV worth the wait.
Here are some limitations:
• It works with TVs that accept newer component or HDMI cables
• Apple TV cannot access the most famous video sharing site YouTube.
• Though Apple TV has a 40GB HDD, but users will not be able to record live TV broadcasts.
• The boot up time for Apple TV is more than 2 minutes, while the TV can start showing instantly.
• Syncing over a wireless G network is slower than one would expect
• The content on the Apple TVs HDD cannot be manually managed. Like you can delete or add songs one at a time in your iPod, the same cannot be done in Apple TV. All you can do is to re-sync your Apple TV to change what’s on the disk.
• Trailers have to be completely buffered before you can play them if you stream them from the iTunes store, and fast forwarding is a bit wonky on streamed videos.
However Apple states that their new offering will be highly competitive in the growing crop of offerings that deliver Internet-based videos to the TV. Apple TV is suggested a price tag of $299.
