A robot that imitates human expressions
Bhagaban Sahu | Jun 13 2008

POMI is not an animal, but looks like an animal and does what an animal can do. Here POMI stands for Penguin Robot for Multimodal Interaction. It is a wonderful robot designed and developed by South Koran state-run research institute, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). Developed in line with network-based interactive technology, this animal-shaped robot can see, hear, touch, smell and imitate human expressions of emotion. It shows different kinds of facial expressions depending upon the moods and moves facial parts including lips, eyebrows and pupils. Not only that, POMI also emits fragrances depending on the emotions.

POMI can communicate with humans in a natural way by expressing emotions like heartbeats. During communication, the robot replies to human queries due to the installment of voice recognition technology.

With all these qualities, POMI seems to be a highly useful gadget to study animal behavior. This wonderful robot will be commercially available next month.
